Transfer Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP) are two protocols that govern how data is transferred, sent and received, over the internet. TCP/IP plays a key role in connecting two networks over the internet. At the point where data is being sent, TCP divides it into smaller segments of information and reassembles them at the receiving in the correct order, while IP directs the correct path to the destination and how to get there. The components of TCP and their functionality:
Transfer Control protocol consists of four major components:
- Application layer
- Transport layer
- Network layer
- Link layer
Each of the abovementioned layers is an abstraction layer, consisting of its own protocols.
The Application layer deals with communications on the basic level with the application. The application layer consists of the following protocols:
